MOUNT PLEASANT, MI -- A 32-year-old Rosebush woman is charged with 10-year felonies after her 7-week-old child died while sleeping in a bed with her, her boyfriend and her other child.

Erica Justine Houghton was arraigned Friday, Nov. 3, on charges of felony and misdemeanor child abuse and lying to police. The harshest of the charges, second-degree child abuse and second-degree child abuse committed in the presence of another child, are 10-year felonies.

The morning of Aug. 2, Houghton awoke to find the lifeless body of her 7-week-old son Bentley. Though she had fallen asleep with him in the crook of her arm, he was now underneath the blankets by her legs, according to court documents.

Resuscitation efforts by emergency responders were unsuccessful, and the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

In an affidavit to support the criminal complaint, investigators said conditions within the Rosebush mobile home were 'deplorable,' citing feces and bugs throughout the residence, piles of dirty clothes, food stuck on the stove, dirty dishes in the sink and a 'melting watermelon' in the refrigerator.

'The smell was so bad you could smell it from outside of the trailer,' investigators stated in the affidavit.

The night of Bentley's death, Houghton had arrived home tired from washing dishes all day at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort, the affidavit reads.

Around midnight, she fed Bentley and then took him to sleep in the bed with her, her boyfriend and her 2-year-old child, according to the affidavit. Houghton awoke with her head at the foot of the bed and her legs next to the child, who was 'completely covered with the blanket.'

She went to the kitchen and returned a few minutes later, pulling the covers off of the baby and seeing he was dead, the affidavit reads.

When asked by investigators, Houghton said she didn't know it was unsafe to sleep in the same bed with an infant and that she'd never been told so, according to the affidavit.

Records were pulled from McLaren Central Michigan Hospital regarding her last three children and whether she was instructed about sleeping with an infant.

'Records show she was advised by hospital staff several times about safe sleep and not to sleep with her infant before she was discharged with each baby,' investigators stated.

Houghton's full charges are second-degree child abuse, second-degree child abuse committed in the presence of another child, lying to a police officer on a four-year-or-more crime investigation, fourth-degree child abuse, lying to a police officer on a serious misdemeanor investigation and contributing to the delinquency or neglect of a child.

Houghton was given a $60,000 bond.
